ABOUT THE BOOK:

Someone knows what you did… and they’re watching you…

Daniel is living the dream with a devoted wife, perfect job and adorable toddler. Until, out of the blue, his wife accuses him of having an affair and stabs him in a frenzied attack with a kitchen knife. As his wife is sectioned in a psychiatric ward, Daniel returns home from intensive care to find his precious world is inexorably falling apart:

Who is prowling around his house?

Why is someone sending threatening postcards?

And who is his son talking to in the dead of night?

As Daniel attempts to put his life back together, a merciless force just out of reach is unravelling it, bit by bit, until Daniel is plunged into his worst nightmare.

MY REVIEW:

I found this book to be so addicting. A loving married couple, with a young child at home. They appear to have the perfect marriage, a happy life. That is until the wife has been accused of stabbing her husband and trying to murder him! Why would a loving and devoted wife and mother do that to the man she loves? Maybe their life isn’t as perfect as everyone thought?

I loved how the novel began, as the woman wakes up and has no memory of what is going on. It added to the suspense and thrill of reading the book, and the suspense added more and more. We slowly get pieces of what truly happened that night and all is slowly revealed, which leads the reader to want to know more ASAP! I kept flipping pages to see what would happen next. I was hooked!

I thought I knew what was going on but wow was I wrong! This book is full of secrets, lies, betrayal and deception, and will keep you guessing until the very end. With a heart pounding ending, and a twist you won’t see coming your way, this book will appeal to suspense and thriller fans alike.

Be sure to read this novel, and add it to your TBR this summer. You will love it!

Happy Publication Day!! This book is on sale today!

Thank you to both Minotaur Books and Doubleday Canada for gifting me beautiful paperback ARC copies of this incredible book to read and share my review with others.

……

ABOUT THE BOOK:

“Few crimes are reported as quickly as a snatched kid.”

That’s what the officer tells single mother Aubrey Finch after she reports a kidnapping. So why hasn’t anyone reported the little boy missing? Aubrey knows what she saw: a boy being taken against his will from the park. It doesn’t matter that the mother can’t be found. It doesn’t matter if no one reported it. Aubrey knows he’s missing.

Instead, people question her sanity. Aubrey hears the whispers. She’s a former stay-at-home mom who doesn’t have primary custody of her daughter, so there must be something wrong with her, right? Others may not understand her decision to walk away from her safe life at home, but years of hiding her past – even from the people she loves – were taking their toll, and Aubrey knows she can’t be the mother or wife she envisions until she learns to leave her secrets behind.

When the police refuse to believe her, she realizes that rescuing the boy is up to her alone. But after all the secrets, how far is she willing to go? Even to protect a child.

……

MY REVIEW:

I have read a previous book by Kelley Armstrong and loved it and when I heard about this newest novel I couldn’t wait to get a copy of my own to read. I love her style of writing, and the way her writing draws your attention into the story and demands your attention all throughout. This book was no different and I was not disappointed.

Imagine witnessing a young boy being taken from someone into a vehicle and being driven off to who knows where. Only to report it to the police and they do nothing about it? In fact, they barely pay much attention to your story and you are frustrated because you know.. you are certain something sinister is at play, but what? Would you take matters into your own hands, put your own life on the line and risk your safety and the safety if your own family?

I loved how gripping this novel was. I loved the main character Aubrey. She has a dark, secretive past that even her estranged husband doesn’t know about. She keeps it hidden and secret from everyone she knows, and it eats her up inside. Her and her ex have a daughter together, that lives with her ex. Aubrey takes her on the weekends and many people do not understand why or how a mother can just up and leave their child behind. Don’t most judges side with the mother? Aubrey has her reasons and those reasons are revealed to us as the story moves along.

I enjoyed the various components of this book. We learn about Aubrey’s marriage and what leads to her marriage falling apart. We learn about her dark and mysterious past, that has made her into the woman she is today. What lead her to make all the decisions in life that she has made. We also learn about her current relationship with her ex. The feelings are still there, at least on her part, but he is seeing someone else and has been for a while now.

There is so much going on in this novel and I loved everything about it. I could seriously not put this book down. I flew through the chapters, completed engrossed in what was happening and wanting to know more. I loved the character development of the lead characters, and I was curious to know if Aubrey would be able to solve the situation with the kidnapped child on her own, with or without the police’s help.

A book that will have you flipping the pages to see what will happen next, be sure to add this book to your TBR list. You will love it!

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Welcome to the escape room. Your goal is simple. Get out alive.

In the lucrative world of finance, Vincent, Jules, Sylvie, and Sam are at the top of their game. They’ve mastered the art of the deal and celebrate their success in style—but a life of extreme luxury always comes at a cost.

Invited to participate in an escape room as a team-building exercise, the ferociously competitive co-workers crowd into the elevator of a high rise building, eager to prove themselves. But when the lights go off and the doors stay shut, it quickly becomes clear that this is no ordinary competition: they’re caught in a dangerous game of survival.

Trapped in the dark, the colleagues must put aside their bitter rivalries and work together to solve cryptic clues to break free. But as the game begins to reveal the team’s darkest secrets, they realize there’s a price to be paid for the terrible deeds they committed in their ruthless climb up the corporate ladder. As tempers fray, and the clues turn deadly, they must solve one final chilling puzzle: which one of them will kill in order to survive?

……

MY REVIEW:

Absolutely amazing! This book had me hooked from the beginning!

Imagine being invited to take part in a team building exercise with your co-workers, who are just as hard working and cut throat as you are? Who will all do whatever it takes to get to the top of the corporate ladder? All 4 co-workers are trapped in an elevator, in what starts off as a seemingly innocent fun game of the classic ‘escape room’ that quickly turns into a much darker, sinister game that is not quite as fun as they expected. The elevator doors lock, the lights go out, and cryptic clues are revealed, that turn more sinister than the previous clue. It quickly becomes clear to the 4 colleagues that something much darker than they anticipated is happening.

As members begin the panic, and confusion creeps in about what exactly is going on, paranoia kicks in and things turn deadly serious. Will the colleagues be able to work together to escape and get out alive, or will they slowly but surely begin turning on one another, to ensure they escape with their lives?

What would you do if you were faced with this deadly game? Would you do whatever it takes to get out? Would you do whatever it takes to survive?

A fantastic book that you must read! You will not be disappointed!

Book Review: The East End by Jason Allen @parkrowbooks @HarperCollins #TheEastEnd #bookreview #bookreviewer #bookblog #bookblogger #booksonthebookshelf

39298096

PUBLISHER: Park Row

PUBLICATION DATE: May 7th, 2019

……

Thank you to the publisher for gifting me an eARC of this book via NetGalley.

……

ABOUT THE BOOK:

THE EAST END is an atmospheric debut novel of family secrets and scandal, of love and heartbreak, of working class struggle versus the privileges of the super wealthy, all set in a place whose incredible beauty means both pleasure and pain – a place where people will die for love, kill for truth, and dream of escaping forever.

THE EAST END opens with Corey Halpern, a Hamptons local from a broken home who breaks into mansions at night for kicks. He likes the rush and admittedly, the escapism. One night just before Memorial Day weekend, he breaks into the wrong home at the wrong time: the Sheffield estate where he and his mother work. Under the cover of darkness, their boss Leo Sheffield — billionaire CEO, patriarch, and owner of the vast lakeside manor — arrives unexpectedly with his lover, Henry. After a shocking poolside accident leaves Henry dead, everything depends on Leo burying the truth. But unfortunately for him, Corey saw what happened and there are other eyes in the shadows.

Hordes of family and guests are coming to the estate the next morning, including Leo’s surly wife, all expecting a lavish vacation weekend of poolside drinks, evening parties, and fireworks filling the sky. No one can know there’s a dead man in the woods, and there is no one Leo can turn to. With his very life on the line, everything will come down to a split-second decision. For all of the main players—Leo, Gina, and Corey alike—time is ticking down, and the world they’ve known is set to explode.

Told through multiple points of view, THE EAST END highlights the socio-economic divide in the Hamptons, but also how the basic human need for connection and trust can transcend class differences. Secrecy, obsession, and desperation dictate each character’s path. In a race against time, each critical moment holds life in the balance as Corey, Gina, and Leo approach a common breaking point. THE EAST END is a propulsive read, rich with character and atmosphere, and marks the emergence of a talented new voice in fiction.

……

MY REVIEW:

I found this book to be quite an interesting read that had me intrigued from the beginning. A young man named Corey who breaks into homes for kicks. Just because he can. Corey was an interesting character to read about in this book. I enjoyed reading about his sudden friendship with a young girl his age as they accidentally stumble across one another one night when he is in a home he has broken into. The circumstances that cause them to force paths, as they happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Without giving too much away, their timely meeting was curious.

I enjoyed how the novel was told from different view points. It seems Corey wasn’t the only one hiding secrets and had something to hide. In a popular and wealthy place such as the Hamptons, it seems there are several secrets and betrayals around.

I enjoyed reading this story as it unfolded and found myself wanting to know what would happen next. So many secrets and deception, how could you not enjoy such a juicy novel as this one.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Elliðaey is an isolated island off the coast of Iceland. It is has a beautiful, unforgiving terrain and is an easy place to vanish.

The Island is the second thrilling book in Ragnar Jonasson’s Hidden Iceland trilogy. This time Hulda is at the peak of her career and is sent to investigate what happened on Elliðaey after a group of friends visited but one failed to return.

Could this have links to the disappearance of a couple ten years previously out on the Westfjords? Is there a killer stalking these barren outposts?

……

MY REVIEW:

This is the 2nd novel in the Hidden Iceland trilogy. I have previously read Jonasson’s first novel in the series titled The Darkness and absolutely love it!

I love the main character, Detective Hulda Hermannsdottir. She is a badass detective and knows how to get what she wants. It is nice to read a novel with such a strong female lead character and this book does just that. It is interesting to read about Hulda and you learn so much about her personal growth as a detective and I loved her character development as you read through the books.

I enjoyed getting pieces of Hulda’s life in this novel, as we learn little tidbits of what her life was like, her experiences, her losses and her struggles. It was definitely interesting to learn more about her as a person, and I quite enjoyed this aspect of the book.

This trilogy is written in reverse order. The first novel is written near the end of her career before she retires and this novel is set in the middle of her career. If you love a good police type novel with a twist of darkness then this series is definitely for you. You will not be disappointed.

I look forward to reading the next novel in the series and reading more about Hulda and learning more about her complex and intriguing character.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

THE WIFE: For Alice, life has never been better. With her second husband, she has a successful business, two children, and a beautiful house.

HER HUSBAND: Alice knows that life could have been different if her first husband had lived, but Nathan’s arrival into her life gave her back the happiness she craved.

HER BEST FRIEND: Through the ups and downs of life, from celebratory nights out to comforting each other through loss, Alice knows that with her best friend Beth by her side, they can survive anything together. So when Nathan starts acting strangely, Alice turns to Beth for help. But soon, Alice begins to wonder whether her trust has been misplaced . . .

The first mistake could be her last.

……

MY REVIEW:

This book! Wow!! After reading (AND LOVING) Sandie Jones’ first novel The Other Woman, I knew I had to get my hands on this book ASAP! And I was NOT disappointed! Who doesn’t love a good thrill of a book that will have you gasping, guessing (and second guessing) and sitting on the edge of your seat!?

This book takes you on a wild ride that explores lies, betrayal, deception and secrets. I really liked Alice’s character. I felt sorry for her losing her first husband and reading about her loss and devastation after his death. Thankfully she was given a second chance at true love when she met Nathan. Their life is great together and they are happy with two children. Her best friend Beth has always been there for her. Suddenly, when Nathan and Beth meet for the first time things turn weird.. Nathan acts strangely and Alice cannot figure out what is going on. Is he hiding something? What could it be?

When things aren’t always as they seem, who can you turn to for the truth? Who can you believe?

A fabulous book that I devoured and loved right through to the very shocking end!

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Literary agent Viola Matthews is sure she’s met Katherine Baxter before. So when her husband and bestselling novelist Samuel Morton introduces Viola to the quiet, unassuming woman he has offered to mentor, she knows their paths have crossed before. The question is where?

As their worlds collide and the bond between Samuel and Katherine deepens, Viola realises she must take control.

If Viola is right, then Katherine needs to pay for something that happened twelve years ago.

……

MY REVIEW:

This was an enjoyable read that will keep you guessing and wanting to know more. When Viola is introduced to Katherine, a woman her author husband has introduced her to as the woman he will mentor, Viola is certain they have met before. But where would that have been? Could Viola be mistaken?

Katherine is a married mom with a controlling husband. Her husband Paul doesn’t want her to have much of a life outside the home and being a mother and wife. He certainly doesn’t agree with her pursuing a career in writing or being an author at all. Regardless of his wishes Katherine decides to move forward with her dream of becoming a writer.

I found myself wanting to know more about Viola and Katherine and their history together. What happened between them? Do they truly know one another? You’ll have to read the book to find out.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

For fans of Stephen King’s Misery and Jo Nesbø’s The Snowman comes an engrossing thriller about a monster who becomes a victim and a victim who becomes a monster. From Patrick Senécal, the Quebec author who has sold over a million books worldwide.

One sunny fall day, Dr. Bruno Hamel’s life changes forever.

His beloved seven-year-old daughter, Jasmine, is the victim of a tragic crime. Grief-stricken, Hamel sets in play a meticulous plan. He will kidnap the man responsible for his daughter’s death and make him pay horribly for what he has done. He manages to ambush a police transport and disappear with his target.

But Hamel hasn’t accounted for Hervé Mercure, a detective with a troubled past who becomes certain he can track down Hamel by studying clues in his past—and in the increasingly unsettling phone calls Hamel makes to his partner, Sylvie.

Both riveting and provocative, this daring thriller is an enthralling meditation on what it means to be human—and to battle the monster within and without.

……

MY REVIEW:

Wow what a thrill of a ride! Be sure to buckle your seatbelt! I found myself so deeply immersed in this dark and gripping story, that I could not wait to see what would happen next. A dark, edgy story that follows a man on his mission for revenge – revenge on the “monster” who took the life of his little girl. What ensues will shock you! I know it shocked me! I flipped through the pages and could not put this book down.

I felt so many emotions for the main character in this novel, Dr. Bruno Hamel. He seemed like a well known, respected doctor, loving and doting husband and father, full of kindness and love. Then tragedy strikes and it is like a monster emerges. He turns dark and twisted, and turns on the man responsible. Will Hamel continue to listen to the demons inside his mind or will he triumph over his demons and set things right? At times I felt sorry for Hamel and everything he went through, but then I despised him at times for giving into the demons and being unable to battle the monster within. Then as the story continued I felt sorry for him all over again.

A truly great novel that was a joy and pleasure to read.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Melville Heights is one of the nicest neighbourhoods in Bristol, England; home to doctors and lawyers and old-money academics. It’s not the sort of place where people are brutally murdered in their own kitchens. But it is the sort of place where everyone has a secret. And everyone is watching you.

As the headmaster credited with turning around the local school, Tom Fitzwilliam is beloved by one and all—including Joey Mullen, his new neighbor, who quickly develops an intense infatuation with this thoroughly charming yet unavailable man. Joey thinks her crush is a secret, but Tom’s teenaged son Freddie—a prodigy with aspirations of becoming a spy for MI5—excels in observing people and has witnessed Joey behaving strangely around his father.

One of Tom’s students, Jenna Tripp, also lives on the same street, and she’s not convinced her teacher is as squeaky clean as he seems. For one thing, he has taken a particular liking to her best friend and fellow classmate, and Jenna’s mother—whose mental health has admittedly been deteriorating in recent years—is convinced that Mr. Fitzwilliam is stalking her.

Meanwhile, twenty years earlier, a schoolgirl writes in her diary, charting her doomed obsession with a handsome young English teacher named Mr. Fitzwilliam…

……

MY REVIEW:

I found myself hooked to this novel from the beginning. I enjoyed how the novel was told from alternating timelines and perspectives. We got to learn about several different and intriguing characters, some you will like and some you will loathe.

Freddie was quite an interesting and likeable character. A teenager who leads a pretty isolated life, spending a lot of his free time alone in his bedroom and watching people. He would often spy on them and take photos, and enjoyed secretly observing others. When he observes Joey acting strangely around his father he cannot help but wonder what exactly is going on between the two of them.

Some characters in the novel are not as they appear to be, and what ensues will keep you guessing to the very end. Without giving too much away, the novel is full of secrets, lies and deception. A book that you will enjoy right to the very twist at the end that you will not see coming.

Hi everyone and welcome to my stop on the blog tour for Forget My Name by J.S. Monroe. Thank you to the publisher for sending me a beautiful paperback copy of this book to read and share my review.

……

ABOUT THE BOOK:

You are outside your front door. There are strangers in your house. Then you realise… You can’t remember your name.

She arrived at the train station after a difficult week at work. Her bag had been stolen, and with it, her identity. Her whole life was in there –passport, wallet, house key. When she tried to report the theft, she couldn’t remember her own name. All she knew was her own address. Now she’s outside Tony and Laura’s front door. She says she lives in their home. They say they have never met her before.

One of them is lying.

……

MY REVIEW:

WOW!! Just wow! This book was absolutely amazing.

This book was thrill after thrill, shock after shock, twist after twist. I loved how the novel kept me guessing to the very end, and you never knew which way the story was going to turn next. With an unreliable, untrustworthy and shady main character, to other characters you will learn to love (or love to hate!), this novel was a heck of a ride and a pleasure to read. From the beginning to the end, I was immersed in this story. Who is this strange woman that comes knocking unexpectedly on Tony and Laura’s door? Why does she think she lives there? And if she does, what are THEY doing in HER house?

Nothing is as it seems, so who can you trust? When you cannot separate the truth from the lies and deception, what are you to do? It will leave you wanting to know more as you read through the chapters and more of the story unfolds.

I found myself wanting to know how the main character had lost her memory. Will she be able to regain her memory and piece back together the pieces of the puzzle that is her life and regain her life back? Or will her life remain a mystery?

A definite must-read that you need to add to your TBR list! You will not be disappointed.
