Thank you to Raincoast Books and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt for gifting me a beautiful hardcover copy of Not Even Bones by Rebecca Schaeffer to read and share my review with other. This book cover is stunning I love it! When I read the synopsis of this book I knew it was one I had to read, and I was not disappointed!
ABOUT THE BOOK:
Dexter meets This Savage Song in this dark fantasy about a girl who sells magical body parts on the black market — until she’s betrayed.
Nita doesn’t murder supernatural beings and sell their body parts on the internet–her mother does that. Nita just dissects the bodies after they’ve been “acquired.” Until her mom brings home a live specimen and Nita decides she wants out; dissecting a scared teenage boy is a step too far. But when she decides to save her mother’s victim, she ends up sold in his place–because Nita herself isn’t exactly “human.” She has the ability to alter her biology, a talent that is priceless on the black market. Now on the other side of the bars, if she wants to escape, Nita must ask herself if she’s willing to become the worst kind of monster.
Dark, magical, and deceit. Three words to describe this book. I loved this book and the dark twisty story line from beginning to end. The writer grabs your attention from the very beginning and demands your interest the whole ride through to the very end!
Young Nita dissects supernatural beings and her mother sells the body parts to others who consume them. Whether it be for super powers, strength, health, supernatural body parts are a hot commodity and Nita herself is not exactly a normal human.
I enjoyed the supernatural vibe to this book. Full of supernatural beings with different powers, strengths and weaknesses. Nita is introduced to a lot of different supernatural characters in this book, and there is no shortage of lies, betrayal, deception and secrets. Who can Nita trust? Can those closest to her be trusted? Can those who set out to harm her be trusted?
I enjoyed Nita’s character. She was stubborn, determined, and a fighter. She didn’t take no for an answer and fought for what she wanted and what she believed in. Despite the fact that she dissected supernatural beings she had a good heart, and sometimes it got the best of her and was her downfall.
Overall an incredible story that I flew through as it was such an entertaining, addictive fantasy world, and that ending!! Whew I loved it! I am excited for the release of the second book in this series, coming out later this year.
A must add book to add to your to be read list!
MY RATING: 5/5 stars
